The Credit Union is not a county agency. We are a "not-for-profit" financial cooperative owned by our members. To maintain your membership, you must keep at least $5.00 on deposit at all times in the Regular Share Savings. All income generated within the Credit Union, less operating expenses and federal reserve requirements, is returned to members in the form of service benefits and dividends.
Rates and general operating policies are established by the Board of Directors. Board members are elected to serve a three year term by the membership at the Annual Meeting. The regulation of Credit Union policies is conducted by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and all accounts are insured up to $100,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF).

The mission of Educational Systems Federal Credit Union is to grow by helping the members of the education community achieve their financial goals and dreams.
We were created over the years from the joining of several education credit unions and communities in Maryland. Educational Systems Federal Credit Union now serves the education communities in Prince George’s County, Charles County, Calvert County, St. Mary’s County and Talbot County, Maryland. We were founded by educators, for the purpose of serving the members of the greater education community, which includes county school system employees, students and their parents, community colleges, and other schools in our service area.
Being a credit union means that Educational Systems Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative. We do not have outside stockholders like a bank. We are owned by our members and we are in business for the sole benefit of our members. Money deposited into the Credit Union by our members is used for the purpose of making loans to help other members of the greater education community borrow for their homes, autos, or other productive purposes. Since Educational Systems Federal Credit Union is of significant size, we are able to offer products and services found at major banks and we typically offer a better value. More importantly, to better serve our owners, we pride ourselves on our integrity by not having hidden fees or surprises in fine print!

Board of Directors
Our 9-member Board of Directors, which is elected by the membership, is responsible for establishing and revising policy, setting savings dividends and loan interest rates, and overseeing operations. Because we are a member-owned and member-controlled financial institution, each member has an equal vote in the Board elections, as well as the opportunity to serve as a Board official. The Beginning
APL Federal Credit Union was officially chartered on April 29, 1954, when the Bureau of Federal Credit Unions approved the organizing group’s application. The group, consisting of employees at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), formed the credit union to serve the financial needs of the Applied Physics Lab’s workforce. From those humble beginnings, the credit union grew slowly but steadily for the next 47 years, serving as the primary financial institution for the vast majority of JHU/APL employees and their families.
Howard County's Community Credit Union
In 2001, APL FCU received the community charter for Howard County, opening APL FCU membership to everyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in the county, and members of their families.
For the past 8 years, APL Federal Credit Union has strived to become the financial institution of choice for Howard County residents, while continuing to serve the needs of JHU/APL staff members and their families.

Even though APL Federal Credit Union is now a community credit union, we have never forgotten our roots and long association with The Applied Physics Lab. We are proud of the more than half century of service we have provided to JHU/APL staff members, and look forward to serving them for years to come even as we grow in the community
