Allegany County Library System
The Allegany County Library System is one of 24 public library systems in Maryland. It consists of six branches, including the Main Branch on Washington Street in Cumberland, as well as branches in Frostburg, George's Creek, LaVale, South Cumberland, and Westernport. A Bookmobile is headquartered at the LaVale Branch.
The system serves citizens of all ages in the Allegany County Region with collections of books, newspapers, magazines, films, video and audio cassettes, and electronic material. The Washington Street Library has the Cumberland Times-News on microfilm back to August, 1941.
Each of the libraries in the system also has free computer access to the Internet and to the Maryland Sailor project, a web site focused on Maryland information, with links to Maryland Libraries, specialized databases, and a gateway to the World Wide Web. The Maryland Marina (Interlibrary Loan) project enables requests for materials from libraries outside of the Allegany County Library System to be processed daily.
